The U.S. government filed charges against two former Twitter employees and a third person for allegedly spying on Twitter users on behalf of Saudi Arabia on Tuesday.
The two former Twitter employees Ahmad Abouammo and Ali Alzabarah and a third person named Ahmed Almutairi were first charged with two crimes in 2019 for allegedly using their work on the social media platform to provide non-public information about Twitter accounts who are critical of the Saudi royal family to the Saudi government.

The new charge, which replaces the original charge, came shortly after the U.S. Attorney's Office recommended that the charges against the three be dismissed. In addition, the charges are extended to seven crimes: representing a foreign government without notifying the attorney general, conspiring to commit wire fraud, wire fraud, money laundering, money laundering, destruction, alteration or forgery of records in federal investigations, aid and offsetting, and criminal forfeiture.
