Former Racer Stole Motorcycles to Fund Addiction

The Kandy Divisional Crime Investigation Division has arrested a former motorcycle racer for stealing and selling motorcycles to find money for his heroin addiction

The police have so far seized six stolen motorcycles which the suspect had either mortgaged or sold for money.

The suspect, a 27-year-old member of a wealthy family in the Ragama area, was a skilled motorcyclist, the police said.

Police say that after becoming addicted to drugs, he first sold his motorcycle used for racing and then stole and sold motorcycles.

Police investigations have revealed that the suspect has been stealing motorcycles parked on the main roads and selling or mortgaging them at very low prices.

He has sold motorcycles worth around Rs. 500,000 for around Rs. 100,000, the Police said.

Police have found six motorcycles that had been sold or pawned after questioning the suspect.

It has been revealed that the suspect had stolen a number of other motorcycles and the police have launched a special investigation to find them.
