Former CJI Ranjan Gogoi was sworn in as a Rajya Sabha member on Thursday. Gogoi was nominated to the Rajya Sabha by the President Ram Nath Kovind on Monday after the recommendation of the government.
During his tenure, former Chief Justice Gogoi came to the limelight to give verdict on many important matters including the Ayodhya land dispute, the Rafale fighter plane and the entry of women in Sabarimala.
The Ministry of Home Affairs had issued a notification on Monday night to nominate Ranjan Gogoi for Rajya Sabha member.
Many questions are being raised by the Opposition on the name of Ranjan Gogoi nominated for Rajya Sabha by President Ram Nath Kovind.
Senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal has also asked Gogoi to give clarification in the matter of giving clean chit in the Rafale case to the government. Sibal also made a tweet referring to Gogoi’s comment, in which he wrote that “Ranjan Gogoi said that after taking the oath I will tell the media why I accepted the proposal to go to Rajya Sabha”.
Sibal also asked Gogoi to also explain why he decided in his own case. Why was the envelope closed judicial system? Why the electoral bond case was not taken, why the CBI director was removed.
On 9 November 2019, the Bench headed by Ranjan Gogoi, while giving a big verdict in the Ram temple land dispute, had declared the land as Ramlala. This historic decision was closely watched by the world.
