FOREIGN OSCAR GUIDE: Africa and Middle East

Just last year, a first-time submission from the African nation of Mauritania secured a nod over the likes of France, Italy and Spain. That balance between the old establishment and the new upstarts is well reflected in this year’s entries from Africa and the Middle East. With an eclectic mix of brand new talent and established masters, they signify a promising cross-generational discourse in the region’s cinema.
