Food Review: The Bird, Am Falkplatz. 5, Berlin, Germany

By Emma @glasgowfoodie

Muffin top at The Bird, Berlin

One of the places we had to visit  in Berlin was The Bird. It’s listed on every To Do burger list and is seen as one of the best burger joints in Berlin, so off we went after a hard day’s touristing. Near to Mauerpark with tube stations nearby at Schönhauser Allee and Eberswalder Straße.

It was absolutely heaving with no spaces for another hour, we put our names down and relocated to a nearby bar for drinks in the meantime.

After a cheeky cocktail we returned for our “picnic” tables just outside (it was a warm night) and had a look at the menu filled with meat and no-nonsense explanations. The staff buzzed about the bare-walled interior laden with jugs of beer and banter. Everything looked good.

Da Birdhouse

Da Birdhouse – €11.50

This is the Bird’s standard house burger, wow. The full description on the menu of two beef patties topped with American cheese, bacon, fried onions, ketchup, mustard, pickles and; enough grease to kill a donkey. It was messy, very messy.

The Big Crack

Basically “Just like the burger in that other place except there is meat in it” – €11.50.  Huge  portion with slabs of ground meat topped with American cheese.  An explosion in your hands.

The Dum Texan

The Dum Texan was a burger off the grill topped with a fried egg – €11.

This is not the type of place to not get dirty, the burgers are cooked rare as standard and are very soft and juicy with all sorts of stuff oozing everywhere! You’ll be needing a whole roll of kitchen towel here most definitely. Our only down-votes were for the bun being a muffin (we love muffins but it just didn’t want to hold that burger down!) and the beer – we all opted for CREW Republic craft beers from Munich but to be honest we were expecting more, the Detox (perhaps aptly named?) was very weak and watery and had a stale old mop taste (yuck!), the Munich Easy wasn’t much better and still lacked in flavor and density. The Foundation 11 was the best of the lot but even then it was run of the mill. As such we bought some real beer – Schneider Weisse all round!

Total cost was €59.50 for three burgers and six beers.

TL;DR
+ Incredibly juicy patties
+ Good beer selection
+ Huge portions

– Bun – noooo!
– Germany makes great beer but the jury is still out when it comes to craft beer
