Neapolitan pizza at Mozza

In our Foodie Explorer Awards 2018, we awarded Mozza our best pizza / pizzeria of the year but we haven't written about how much we love Mozza, so here it finally is!

The type of pizza served both here and in Paesano, is a Neapolitan pizza. This is considered the true original pizza. (And after holidaying in Naples where we got to taste the real deal, this is just like the ones we had there).

To be truly Neapolitan, the pizza is hand-kneaded and cooked at high temperatures in a wood-fired pizza oven for no longer than 90 seconds and the finished product has a soft airy dough base.

According to the rules from the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana, the Pizza topping must be made with either San Marzano or Roma tomatoes from Campania and use Mozzarella di Bufala Campana. The menu at Mozza states that their tomato sauce uses San Marzano tomatoes, mozzarella from Naples and olive oil and flour from Italy as well so lots of Naples pizza ticks.

The pizza

There are 13 options on the menu from the traditional Neapolitan tomato sauce with mozzarella, basil and olive oil to the quirky mashed potato, Italian Sausage and black pepper mayo (which of course Mr Foodie had to try) and it was unusual but rather tasty!

Unlucky for some?

If you like to gamble, pick Number 13 as it's a surprise from the chef! Give your server a hint at anything you really don't like so that it isn't so unlucky for you. We had a spicy veggie concoction last time we chose #13.

Mozza pizzas have a soft dough base which is charred and chewy around the edges so not a thin and crispy base. It's also a wet pizza, so beware of dribbles, but it's the way we like...in fact, love it!

As well as pizza there are sides of salad, burrata cheese and tomatoes (the creamiest burrata we've had in a while), or try something else Neapolitan: friarielli broccoli. This is preserved Italian broccoli lightly fried in olive oil. It is served cold so it's a bit of an acquired taste...

Desserts are also available if you have room. The Birramisu is simply tiramisu in a beer glass. It's a big portion so ideal for sharing, as the pizzas really do fill you up.

Verdict

Alongside Paesano and Baffo, Mozza is one of the top destinations for pizza in Glasgow. Every time we have been in the pizzas have been exceptional (and quick!). It may be part of a chain but we currently rate it number 1 for the choice of gourmet toppings. They sell big bottles of Italian craft beer too but these are quite expensive (~£15 a bottle) but are great for sharing. It can get very busy but not quite as busy as Paesano. Sunday to Friday there is a special offer of any pizza ordered before 5pm being a mere £5.
