Food Review: Hyde, 9-17 Partick Bridge St, Glasgow G11 6PN

After hearing good things about the Hyde and salviating at the menu we ventured over to the west end for some brunch on a Saturday morning.

Hyde Glasgow Partick brunch

Outside Hyde, Glasgow

We had booked, as we know these westendies like their brunching, however it was very quiet at 11:45, with only one other customer inside but we had the bonus of being able to pick our seat – we opted for the ones against the back wall beside the mural, which should’ve been cosy and warmer than at the windows but it was a bit chilly – perhaps they could do with a fire at the mural side? The decor was like a Glaswegian ski resort, I half expected fur rugs on the seats (it would’ve kept us warm!).

And onto the food & drink: a white coffee and a soda and lime to start things off whilst checking out the menu. Soda water and lime had a good amount of cordial, but the white coffee and cappuccino were a bit bitter.

Eggs Benedict was on the menu, so had to be ordered. Mr Foodie being the gannet that he is, went for the full breakfast. A strong smell of vinegar also came with the plates when they arrived (from the poached eggs on both dishes presumably).

Hyde - Eggs Benedict

Hyde – Eggs Benedict

The Eggs Benedict – described as being served on a toasted English muffin but it was more a burger bun than a muffin, so we were disappointed as a good muffin soaks up bacon juices, hollandaise and a runny poached egg. There was a good amount of bacon (3 slices) runny yolk from the poached egg as well as creamy hollandaise. However, the non-buttered dry bun let the Eggs Benedict down. It looked good, but didn’t taste as good as it should have.

Hyde - Full Monty breakfast

Hyde – Full Monty breakfast

The Full monty – the bacon was really salty and while the black pudding tasted like the good stuff (from Stornoway) it was cut far too thin so there wasn’t much of it. The beans were more exciting than your usual breakfast beans but the poached egg was a bit over-done so not runny, and all items were on the tepid side.

We were looking forward to brunch at the Hyde  but the food, while being decent didn’t quite hit the mark, and we were also seated in what should’ve been the warmest part of the restaurant but by the end of our meal we both still felt cold.

Our waitress was friendly and pleasant, there’s Free WIFI and the music was chilled and at a good volume. The toilets are individual cubicles, which were a bit messy with toilet paper scattered on the floor yet it was so early and hardly anyone else was in so I assume it hadn’t been cleaned from the previous night (also high chairs are stored in disabled toilet). Easy to access by public transport, it’s just across from Kelvinhall subway and just off Dumbarton Road where plenty of buses can be found.

On leaving we noticed that they do a Monday night promo – 50% off all main courses, burgers and sandwiches from 12-9pm.

TL;DR
+ good selection of brunch items
+ free WIFI
+ good music choice/volume
+ staff were friendly and pleasant

- brunch disappointing
– temperature could’ve been warmer for both the room and food
– lack of atmosphere
– toilets messy
