Pop-up Ekeko Eats currently at McCune Smith Cafe
Ekeko Eats have taken over the McCune Smith Cafe on Duke Street (just at the corner with High Street) with their South East Asian menu while the owners are on holiday, so Mr Foodie popped in for some lunch to see what they were about. Lemongrass, ginger and the aroma of chilli sauce filled the room, yum!
There’s a breakfast menu, as well as a lunch menu to choose from. The wee guy on the cover is presumably Ekeko – South American god of prosperity, abundance and good fortune.
Mr Foodie went straight for the soup and sandwich deal: £6 sit in or £5 take-away. Bao (steamed buns) are only available on Saturday 30th for some reason.
As you can see, it looked amazing…look at those colours jumping out doesn’t it just make your mouth water?
A roll with lemongrass beef which included salad, spicy chillies and a bright orange sauce. Crispy veg, moist and full of lemongrass and punchy Thai flavours, the beef itself got a thumbs up! The soup had a warming kick, not too much just a pleasant mouth tingle. Soup of the day was mushroom and noodle. An excellent broth with vegetables, noodles and of course more chilli and lemongrass, which was zesty and ideal for Mr Foodie with his summer (haha) cold. The mushrooms were also quite meaty.
As Mr Foodie was feeling poorly he had a ginger, lemon and honey steeper (£1.50) which is basically just hot water with those 3 ingredients.
Total cost £7.50. Service was quick and friendly, the toilet was clean and tidy but had a bit of an old granny’s hoose aroma about it! We came back the following day for the grilled kim-cheese sandwich (£4 sit-in/£3 takeaway) and Ekeko eggs (£2.50) which is basically a spicy scrambled eggs with chilli and kimchi etc. Both were also very good!
