Food Poisoning and its Ayurvedic Treatment

Food poisoning is also referred to as a foodborne illness. It is caused by eating contaminated, toxic, or spoiled food. The food is contaminated by infectious organisms — including bacteria, viruses, and parasites — or their toxins. These organisms or their toxins can contaminate food during processing or production. It can also occur at home if it is incorrectly cooked or handled.

It is not usually a serious problem and most people get better within a few days without any treatment. But in moderate or severe cases you may need proper medical treatment.

What are the causes of Food Poisoning?

Most bacterial, viral, or parasitic agents cause food poisoning and the transfer of these harmful organisms from one surface to another is often the main cause. The chances of getting food poisoning are higher in the summer because the food can start to spoil within an hour at 90degree heat.

The viruses that are most commonly the main cause of food poisoning include:

  1. Rotavirus: It is the most common cause of viral gastroenteritis in children
  2. Norovirus: It is more common in adults

Less common viral causes are Astro virus that affects children and the elder people. Cytomegalovirus can cause food poisoning especially in people with compromised immunity.

The bacteria that causes food poisoning are:

  • Salmonella
  • Campylobacter
  • Shigella
  • Escherichia coli
  • Clostridium difficile

What are the symptoms of Food Poisoning?

The symptoms of food poisoning usually depend upon the source of infection. It usually begins within one to two days of eating contaminated food but it can range from as little as 1 hour to as long as 28 days.

The main symptoms of food poisoning include:

  1. Feeling sick
  2. Vomiting
  3. Diarrhea may contain blood or mucus
  4. Abdominal pain
  5. Abdominal cramps
  6. Weakness
  7. Loss of appetite
  8. High Fever and chills
  9. Aching muscles
  10. Headache

Symptoms of severe or life-threatening food poisoning include:

Diarrhea persists for more than three days

  1. A fever higher than 101.5°F
  2. Difficulty in speaking
  3. Dry mouth
  4. Passing little to no urine
  5. Difficulty keeping fluids down
  6. Bloody urine

If you are experiencing these symptoms from the last 3 to 4 days, you should consult the doctor immediately.

What is the Ayurvedic treatment for Food Poisoning?
