Gnom Gnom Gnom

After many years popping up here and there in Glasgow, with a west end food truck along the way, Chomsky (who we always thought should've been called 'Nom Chomsky') finally opened a permanent place in Prenzlauer Berg, sorry we mean Strathbungo in the Southside of Glasgow. If you look closely you can just about make out the name 'Gnom' above the door.

Inside

A trio of samovar-type things are perched on one wall with a selection of foodie books on the other, including Yotam Ottolenghi's Sweet; Martin Morales' Andina: heart of Peruvian food; Daniel Doherty's Duck and Waffle, oh and Deliciously Ella - they were doing so well up until that point. 😂

We squeezed into our seat at the wall as the tables are a bit too close together.

First up, Cilbir Turkish Eggs (£7). Two poached eggs, garlic mint yoghurt, smoked chilli browned butter, pomegranate with sourdough bread - it said 'soldiers' on the menu so if these are soldiers then they're not in great shape! 😂

This was a pleasant mix of Mediterranean/Middle Eastern flavours with two perfect poached eggs.

We also had the Fontina Fondue (£7). Charred spring onions, tender steamed broccoli and fontina cheese fondue on sourdough toast with beer pickled shallots. Deliciously gooey with an acidic wine taste, I'm certainly going to try this at home. The broccoli and spring onions added some healthiness to this cheesy feast. I'd pick this again.

For dessert they do French toast ice cream sandwiches, there's a choice of two and we ordered both of the smaller sizes (£5 each).

One - lemon sherbert ice cream, sesame brittle, blueberries and lime curd. The other cacao ice cream, hazelnuts, blowtorched banana and dark chocolate. This is just enough to give you that sugar buzz without making you feel like the need for a nap. The lemon sherbert ice cream tasted as if I'd just dipped into a packet of sherbert. A fizzy, lemon tang alongside the crisp French toast. Both flavour combinations went down well, however the sesame/lemon combo swung it for me.

There are also cakes and buns on sale for those who wish a lighter bite, or want to take something sweet away. I think those cinnamon buns are being ordered next time!

Gnom was impressive, the food was well-presented and tasty. Staff were friendly with orders taken and food delivered promptly, the atmosphere was relaxed with music from zero7 playing. Toilets were also clean. Our main criticism is that if you're sitting against the wall there's too many tables to make it a comfortable experience as we had to move our table to get in and out and you can hear the conversations on either side of you.

TL;DR
+ Gnom indeed!
