Hailing from the San Francisco Bay area, math rock duo Floral have shared ‘This Year’ – their first new single in half a decade – ahead of the release of their new self-titled LP on 15 February (pre-order via Bandcamp here).
Recorded and produced by Jack Shirley (Deafheaven, Jeff Rosenstock), ‘This Year’ is a twisting, labyrinthine clash of drums and math-rock infused guitars – although the duo always find time for marvellously melodic hooks as the tempo builds, sometimes relentlessly.
The song veers in all kinds of directions across its four minutes with parts that resemble a Kinsella-penned emo sound and others more in the complex TTNG, Lite or Toe mold with irregular time signatures and a technical proficiency you can’t help but nod your head to. It’s a sign that ‘This Year’ could well be Floral’s year.
