Flat Iron Square, as it has been newly named, has been created by closing the road to the south of this previously island space and connecting it to the parade of shops. It was designed by Witherford Watson Mann Architects and this phase of the project was completed in 2011 as part of Bankside Urban Forest project. At the centre of this space is the Island Cafe Cafe, name after the fact that it used to be located on a traffic island. A shared type space to the south of this square allows for deliveries to the parade shops and cafe. To the north of the square on street parking and cycle parking are accommodated. The paved surface uses a triangular grid generated by the alignments of Union Street and Ayres Street. The pavers used are a mixture of stone and concrete and create a pleasant effect.
