Flashlight Friends Review #flashlightfriends

By Bloggerfather @bloggerfather
My daughter, who is 3 (and a half! The “and a half” is very important to her), suddenly decided she wasn’t going to sleep through the night anymore. The reasons, we knew already because we’ve dealt with the same thing two years ago when her brother was 3 (and a half), were just excuses: the blanket wasn’t covering her all the way, it was too dark, there were ghosts in the room, the pillow was upside down…
Now, we can’t send her to bed in anger, even if she does wake us up 700 times a night, because she might not know she’s using excuses, and as far as she's concerned, she can't be expected to sleep with an upside down pillow. She really wants to sleep in our bed, and the fact that the blanket is a bit off, that dark=scary, and that there’s a ghost in the room, sure doesn’t help.
A couple of night we let her sleep with the lights on, but that just means she comes up with new stuff. And sleeping under a bright lightbulb is a little too torture-chamber for my liking.
Then we got this package from Flashlight Friends with this sweet unicorn, which my daughter now calls Pony. She plays with it (sorry, she plays with HER) during the day, and she sleeps with her at night. She turns the light on when she goes to sleep, and by the time the light automatically turns off, 10 minutes later, she’s already down, which beats sleeping with the lights on all night and beats going up to her mom and dad’s room every 5 minutes.
So these are the pros: It’s cute, it keeps my daughter in her room, asleep, with the lights off, and it’s great as a reading light, for camping, and for daily cuddling.
There are also cons: It uses batteries, which is a little last-Millenium. I would hope something like that could be recharged rather than use batteries. Also, the batteries are not included, so prepare to buy 3 AAA batteries. Also, in a perfect world, you would have been able to tell this toy how long to keep the light on. If your kid does want to use it for reading or for playing, it might get annoying to have to turn it on again. At the same time, I appreciate the simplicity of the 10 minutes automatic shutdown, which is just right for my daughter.
These Flashlight Friends come with a little handle for little hands to carry around the house, and are available in dragon, puppy, penguin, and unicorn styles. Oh, and a panda. And a turtle. They're available on the Flashlight Friends site, or on other retail sites, like Amazon (my Amazon Associates link to the unicorn Flashlight Friend).
