Five police officers have been admitted to the Kandy National Hospital after being stoned by a group who had come to attack the house of former Minister Keheliya Rambukwella in the Aniwatte area in Kandy on Monday (4).

Following a tip-off that a group was planning to attack the former minister’s residence, a group of STF and Kandy police officers had arrived at the scene around 8.00 pm on Monday.

The area was facing a power cut at the time, and the injured police officers said that they could not prevent stones being pelted in the dark. Police had used tear gas to disperse the crowd.

One of the injured police officers also underwent surgery. Kandy Police are conducting further investigations into the scene.
