Fish and Chips at Catch, Giffnock, Glasgow

Catch of the year in Giffnock

Fish and chips in Glasgow has had a re-branding in recent years with the move away from the traditional fish and chip shop to a more restaurant feel with standards to match. (If you are venturing East, have a look at our review of East Coast in Musselburgh). The original Catch restaurant and takeaway in Giffnock opened in 2014, then in 2017 they opened a smaller takeaway only in Netherlee and then in 2020 they opened another takeaway / restaurant on Gibson St in the west end. We had eaten in the Giffnock restaurant once years ago but hadn't written about our visit so a return was long overdue!

On the right, there are four booths, with tables for couples and large groups upstairs, which is where we were seated.

Catch still looks and feels new. A looked after venue.

We ordered a couple of glasses of wine, the Bespoke Chenin Blanc (£6.30, 250ml), with apple, guava and passion fruit flavours with a mild off-dry lemon finish; and Belle Perle Picpoul de Pinet (£8.20, 250ml), with an apple, pear and mango aroma with a mild acidic lemon taste.

What we ate

We ordered main courses only as the portions are large; panko breaded haddock (£14.75) and tempura king prawns (£13.75). Each main came with a dip, tartare sauce and sweet chilli respectively plus a choice of two additional sauces each - we had chipotle, catch sauce, chilli ketchup and garlic mayo.

The fish was a good size, large with a firm and crispy batter, and was flaky inside. On the side chips were pilled high with ramekins of mushy peas and tartare sauce with half a lemon and homemade pickled onion underneath.

The battered king prawns also came with a mountain of chips, mushy peas, a sweet chilli dip, half a lemon, pickled onions and a sprinkling of chopped spring onion and chilli peppers.

The verdict

Catch delivers really filling portions of fresh seafood to a higher standard that your regular Glasgow chippy. Our fish, prawns and chips were all non-greasy. We were seated quickly and service was attentive throughout.

Toilets are upstairs, in individual cubicles and in good working order. There is some parking on Fenwick Road but it's limited. Giffnock train station is at most a 5 minute walk away while the Stagecoach 4 (Glasgow - Ayr / Kilmarnock) and a selection of First 38 services stop nearby (note that some turn off along Orchard Drive).

In the area is also Lucali, which we wrote about here.

Disclaimer: We received two complimentary mains but had to pay for our drinks
