First Time Experiences with Mead – This Could Be Fun

By Bolanrox

This is more of an intro post than an actual review.  I had tried 5 different ones yesterday from Moonlight and B. Nectar,  and I would want to sample a bit more before I review.

Up until recently what I knew of mead has been limited to some Middle Ages based movies, or maybe the 13th Warrior, and that it was made with Honey.  The liquor store I worked in during college had exactly 1 mead, which came with mulling spices to heat up.  I think I even only sold 1 bottle of that to someone specially wanting to do a Renne Fest themed party.

Now it seems, like with so many other things, the tables have turned.  Will it be the next big thing?  As the IPA wave breaks, and more and more of the older styles are coming back to the forefront, it does seem possible.

So what is mead exactly? Rate Beer describes it as: [a] “Honey wine, which tends to be quite strong and alcoholic-tasting, as honey ferments very well.”  Have to agree with the easily high-proof strong part, but from what I sampled the alcohol was non-existent, not even the feel of a light burn drinking something 32ish proof. Take 120 Minute IPA, less that 2% higher in ABV and all things considered, the alcohol was well hidden, but you could still feel the burn.

Now just to find a few more available locally.  I know my local Distributor carries a few but doing a quick online search today, nothing came up in stock near by.  Perfect op to talk to my local shops and see if anything is in or floating about.
