First Impressions: Stella Women’s Academy, High School Division Class C3

C3-Bu

Somewhere along the way the fun got replaced with something lifeless.

Yura Yamato is a high school girl who’s all excited about heading to Stella Women’s Academy, but when her chance to do what she really wants — to make friends — passes her by, she can only feel dejected and realize this isn’t going to be easy. It also gets complicated when she learns that her roommate, who ended up going home for a bit, has a gun in her room. Specifically, she learns that her friend’s a real gun aficionado, with movies and books and all sorts of stuff involving them. Eventually, without asking for permission she watches a Rambo movie while dressed in Rambo gear while mimicking the lines used in the film, and ends up getting seen in this state by a member of the Academy’s Class C3 club. Now Yura’s invited to join what is essentially a survival game club.

Not sure why this shot happened, but it did

There’s nothing really good I can say about C3-bu right now. The fact of the matter is, nothing of actual interest takes place in the episode, from the start of the anime with Yura’s introduction, to Class C3 attempting to aggressively get new members, to Yura meeting the club, and to the airsoft battle. You would think the bit I just described means the anime had a lot of moving and action and fun interaction, except instead everything that took place was lacking, from its looks to its sounds (and when I mean sounds, this includes the voice actors). I kept waiting for that one interesting moment where I’d actually say I’d be impressed, except instead I found myself wanting to go do something else.

C3-Bu 1

That’s right, someone’s going to just randomly leave a cake in the middle of the floor. Makes sense

What really kills C3-Bu is the characters. The sound presence was lacking (and while the jazz was ok it did not complement the airsoft battle well) and the animation and visuals ranged from ok to “did we have to get a shot of Yura like this? Really?”, but for an anime like this to survive, it needs interesting characters. But I was pretty bored by all of the characters, with the most egregious aggressor being Rento, who sounded exactly like she was voiced by a first time voice actor (and after checking online, she was). I was mostly convinced that instead of the anime being fun, it instead consisted of lifeless, barely enjoyable characters that told me the anime does not know what being fun is. And I’m not exactly holding out hope it’s gonna get any better even with Yura’s roommate, Sonora, eventually showing up. So if you have yet to watch C3-Bu, you don’t have to watch it. Unless you want to watch anime with the uncertain feeling that your soul has been taken away…

This series is streaming on Crunchyroll.
