First Impressions: Nagi No Asukara

NagiAsukara 3

This story isn’t going to end well by the looks of it.

From what my mind at one in the morning remembered, Nagi no Asukara is about teenage fishpeople-er, humans of some sort, who live underwater among the fishies and other creatures of the deep-blue. For some unexplained reason, their school closes and they find themselves obliged to go to the surface and attend classes there until further notice.

But who cares about freakin’ school? The anime will mostly focus on the beautiful (I say basic) love-triangle between fish-girl, her childhood grumpy fish-boy friend, and the silent fisherman’s boy we can all relate to since he’s the only normal one.

If you’re expecting something else rather than an awkward love story which will make one more than twitch at fish-boy’s possessiveness, fish-girl’s naïvete, and boy #2’s…lack of a personality, it’s not too late to move on to another anime. But I should also say it’s too early to give up on this story. It wasn’t shown much throughout the episode, but there’s some unsolved tension existing between those who live underwater, and those who gave up that life for land (today’s humans). And I’m betting on my future Pokemon X save file that this detail is going to be the start of a major problem in a few episodes (don’t you dare say I’m spoiling you).

NagiAsukara 2

Unluckily for us, Nagi no Asukara has high chances of spending the next six or seven episodes further developing the fishy, cringe-worthy love-triangle and distracting us with its beautiful visuals (bizarre CG swimming fishies not included) and appreciable music. I know for sure the visuals will keep me from adding this to my “Dropped Anime” list – they’re too pretty to be overlooked, and I want to see more of the half-god bishonen (shown in the image above) being all awesome and stuff. Speaking about visuals, why do the main characters –excluding normal boy- all have blue eyes? Will it have something to do with the story later on or is it simply because the creators couldn’t get enough of the color blue? Can someone please reassure me this won’t be a color-filtered as the K series?

Until then, get ready to see a turbo of emotions in this anime. Did I already say this wasn’t to end well? The feeling I’m getting in my bones is hard to shake off.

Also, being cursed sucks.
