Little time has passed since the end of the first season of Kamisama Hajimemashita, and it seems that Nanami has gracefully accepted her new life and responsibilities as Land God…somewhat. At least there’s Tomoe and Mizuki to help her along the way.
Kamisama Hajimemashita is a shoujo that I’ve learned to appreciate since the airing of its first season, which led me afterwards to begin reading the manga and following closely the adventures of Nanami and her pals.
While the typical shoujo-esque elements are clearly used in the series, they are usually portrayed in a hilarious, mocking way and I can’t say I wasn’t looking forward to seeing the humor in the manga be shown once again in the anime.
Compared to the first successful season of the anime, very little has changed and the production studio wants to make sure of that by pretending that the last season wasn’t aired a year ago, or at least make us feel right back at home with the new opening theme performed by the same artist who did the first, the unchanged OST tracks, and the general atmosphere displayed in the show.
But throughout the episode, a few different elements come into focus such as the evident rise in the production’s budget, but more importantly (story-wise), the awkward distance Nanami seems to be imposing between herself and Tomoe in order to stop depending on him which might turn into an interesting factor later on.
Aside from those elements, there were some other things I’ve noticed and this time, made me rise a brow. Exactly why hasn’t there been any mention of Kurama, one of the most popular characters? And the recap — while it summarized the plot, it left a number of questions unanswered for those who haven’t seen the first season (Does everyone at school know about Nanami’s powers? Why can’t Mizuki go along with Tomoe and Nanami to school? And the such). Of course, I wouldn’t be surprised if they will gradually answer the questions in due time and in a nicely done way.
Kamisama Hajimemashita has made a great return and it really feels like it hasn’t left us for one year or changed at all, especially if you think about Nanami and Tomoe’s relationship. One can’t help but think that by the time this second season reaches its end, will the couple finally pass all of the obstacles keeping them from living peacefully together or will the worse happen?
