For some people, the headphones you get with your phone are enough to keep them going. If they can make out the melody through all that , then they're satisfied. For those of us with functioning ears though, it's simply not enough! If your headphones have become obsolete, and it's about time you got yourself a fresh pair, then here's a brief guide to choosing the ones that are just right.

As with any piece of tech, the best way to start your search for headphones is by reading some impartial online reviews . While it's a big mistake to order headphones based on their reviews alone, the market for headphones is massive these days, and looking at some reviews will allow you to narrow down your decision to a select few models. Tech sites like and TechRadar are generally good for honest, impartial reviews. However, if you only read reviews from one source, you could end up being misled. Take your time looking for testimonials from different sources, and soon enough you'll be able to hone in on just a few headphones that have everything you're looking for.

As I mentioned above, it's a huge mistake to order headphones online. No matter how much detail you get out of a review, there's no way you can really tell how much you'll like a pair of headphones until you use them. Due to this, I strongly recommend that you find a local store which specialises in audio equipment, and will let you try out different models right there. Unfortunately, this has become progressively less common over the years, and you may have to do a little digging to find a store that will let you treat their equipment like fairground rides. Still, don't take the easy Amazon route - you may live to regret it! A great way to start looking for stores is by visiting a manufacturer's website for a pair that you're interested in. Many of these will have a handy store locator which will show you different outlets where you can buy their gear.

The last major thing you need to consider, which a lot of people unfortunately neglect, is the durability and warranty on the headphones. There's a fair chance that you're reading this post because your last pair of headphones got damaged over time, whether by lots of little bumps or one big drop. When you're visiting the stores you have in mind, be sure to pay attention to the physical makeup of the headphones, and not just the quality of the audio. How durable do they feel? Is the wire flat and beefy, or does it feel like you could snap it with your hands if you wanted to? Be sure to ask about the warranty as well. They haven't perfected indestructible headphones yet, so don't assume you won't need one! Most decent headphones come with a one to two-year warranty, which should be more than enough. If you're planning on taking your headphones on rugged adventures though, it may be worth buying some extra insurance .
