The Ministry of Finance has announced adjustments to the Special Commodity Levy on big onions, effective from December 1, 2024, until December 31, 2024. This measure aims to safeguard local farmers while ensuring consumers have access to affordable prices.

The Rs. 60 per kilogram levy on imported potatoes remains unchanged, but the levy on imported big onions has been reduced from Rs. 30 to Rs. 10 per kilogram.

This decision, based on recommendations from the Ministries of Agriculture and Trade, takes into account the rising market prices of big onions and the potential for higher vegetable costs due to seasonal demand and weather-related factors.

Initially implemented in October, these special commodity levies are part of short-term strategies to stabilize the market, with further policy measures anticipated in the coming months, according to the Ministry’s statement.
