It's been a long time since my last Film Friday post, oops! This time I've got four films to talk about (there would have been more but I don't think I can really rave about The Lego Movie now since it's not being shown in cinemas anymore. Hopefully this post can offer some suggestions if you're fancying a trip to the cinema this weekend!300 Rise Of An Empire
I actually hadn't seen 300 until a week or so before I saw this one! It's very stylised, with an incredible color palette and a lot of slow-mo. Don't let that put you off though, it's a great film, based on Frank Miller's graphic novel, Xerxes telling a new chapter in the battle to unite Greece. It's not necessarily a sequel as it runs alongside the narrative in 300 in a way and I really liked the pacing. If you're new to 300 but have watched Game Of Thrones, you'll recognize the familiar face (and voice) of Lena Headey, though you'll probably know her better as Cersei Lannister. Only 3 more days to go until Season 4!Captain America: The Winter SoldierSome people argue that Captain America is the least exciting avenger, well I disagree. I enjoyed the first film and I thought The Winter Soldier was brilliant. It throws you straight into the action from the beginning (in fact, if you've been to Cineworld recently you may have seen a sneak preview of the first 5 minutes already) where Steve Rogers is working with S.H.I.E.L.D. to rescue hostages from a compromised ship. He meets with S.H.I.E.L.D. director, Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson) who informs him of a new mission; involving three huge heli-ships. The action doesn't stop there and he finds himself facing The Winter Soldier, a soviet assassin alongside Black Widow (the ever-gorgeous Scarlett Johansson). If I say much more I'll need a spoiler disclaimer. If you like action and marvel, you'll love it!
Need For SpeedWhen I saw the trailer for this, I got a little bit excited and not because I have a love for fast cars and dangerous driving; but because I recognised Aaron Paul and knew I'd have to see it even if it was just to watch him. That sounds a bit sad and like I've got some kind of crush on him... It's not (completely) true, I think he's a brilliant actor and after his performance as Jesse Pinkman in Breaking Bad, I'm really excited to see him moving across to the big screen. He plays Tobey Marshall, a blue-collar mechanic struggling to make ends meet to afford to keep running his garage. He races too (would you believe it, it is Need For Speed!) and reluctantly agrees to a deal with Dino Brewster (Dominic Cooper) which takes him in a new direction. Imogen Poots features too and I really liked her character, Julia. Speaking of Imogen Poots and Aaron Paul - they're both in A Long Way Down, a film I really want to see but it's now been taken off the listings at my local cinema! Don't you just hate it when that happens?!
The Grand Budapest HotelWes Anderson's latest masterpiece. If I was to sum it up in one sentence that would be what I'd say. The film recounts the adventures of Gustave H (Ralph Fiennes) a well-known concierge at the hotel and Zero Mustafa (Tony Revolori), his lobby boy. Ralph Fiennes is incredible delivering such a believable performance and genuinely funny moments with Tony Revolori. I found the whole story really interesting and the set design (which I know, is probably something I notice because I study media) was immaculate.
