Fifa 21: ‘Toxic behaviour’ cut from goal celebrations

The Fifa 21 video game will feature fewer celebrations for players as EA Sports attempts to curb "toxic" behavior among players.

Players will no longer be able to use the celebration of "shushing", which was often used to gloat and block games.

Fifa 21 main game producer Sam Rivera said some celebrations have been removed following player calls.

The latest installment of the Fifa video game series is expected to be released in October.

"We were told by the community that there are toxic behaviors in the game, and we wanted to make sure we got them removed," Rivera said.

"So we removed some of the celebrations that people thought was not the best idea to have in the game."

In addition to the "silence" reaction, an "OK" hand gesture will also be removed and the goal celebrations will be shorter overall.

"The intention is just to get you to play instead of doing other things that may not be necessary in the game," Rivera said.

Ryan Howard, co-founder of the gaming platform The Nerd Council, said the changes are unlikely to have a fundamental impact on player behavior.

"Removing the goal celebrations that are considered toxic will not change the nature of the game or the feeling of losing," he said.

The Fifa series remains one of the most popular video game franchises in the world, having sold over 260 million copies in 2018.

The latest edition - Fifa 21 - will be released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, as well as next-generation Xbox Series X and PS5 consoles.

EA Sports claims that the latest consoles will feature improved graphics, taking advantage of the latest technology.

Nintendo Switch players will receive a "legacy edition" of the game which will primarily include new kits, teams and an updated menu system.
