Fever and 5 Common Medicines

Fever:

Fever is defined as a condition when body temperature rises more than the normal. Usually, the average body temperature is found to be 36.2ºC or 98.6 ºF, and if the body temperature exceeds this range the condition termed as Fever.

Basically, fever is not a disease but a symptom of diseases. It usually occurs in the initial phase when diseases are at their budding state. Increasing body temperature signifies that the antibodies or immune system are trying to fight the external agents which are responsible for causing infection or diseases.

Normally, the fever subsides a day or two by itself; if not then some antibiotic, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or any over-the-counter drugs which are meant for regulating the body temperature.  Sometimes, the fever persists for a longer duration or it follows a particular pattern. The pattern signifies specific diseases. If such conditions continue then a doctor should be consulted.

Some of the medicines that are recommended for fever are listed below:

#1. Paracetamol:

Also known as acetaminophen, the medicine is used as a fever reducer and pain reliever. The medicine belongs to the category of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). The medicine aids in blocking chemicals which are responsible for pain. Paracetamol also exhibits antipyretic property which helps in reducing fever, when combined with other medicines.

The medicine is also recommended for colds, toothaches, arthritis, backache, and muscle aches. The drug is only meant to subside the symptom and not the underlying condition. Hence, it is advisable to consult a medical professional to diagnose the cause.

#2. Ibuprofen:

It belongs to the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).  The medicine assists in reducing hormones which are responsible for pain and inflammation in the body. Hence, the medicine is used to reduce fever, treat pain and inflammations.

The drug is recommended for a toothache, back pain, menstrual cramps, minor injury, headache and arthritis.

Ibuprofen is safe to be used by Adults and children above 6 months. There have been some cases of interactions and contraindications; hence a medical professional should be consulted before consuming the medicine.

#3.Aspirin:

The medicine belongs to the category of salicylate. The medicine works by blocking the synthesis of chemical which is responsible for pain, inflammation and fever.

Aspirin is recommended for fever, pain and inflammation. Other than that, the medicine is also prescribed to treat or prevent strokes, chest pain (angina) and heart attack but should be consumed only under the supervision of a doctor.

The medicine, sometimes, produces side effects such as angioedema, vision impairment, epigastric problems due to continuous usage. Hence, the medicine should only be consumed after consulting a doctor.

#4. Dolo 650:

The medicine comes under the category of mild analgesic. The medicine is a pain reliever and is used to treat fever. The medicine works by elevating the pain threshold and reducing the swelling. Dolo 650 works on elevated body temperature by acting on heat regulatory centers in the brain.

The medicine is also recommended for headache, arthritis, toothache and backache. The medicine is found to be safe for pregnant women and lactating mothers.  Dolo 650 mg tablets are used to cope up the pain due to cancer or post-surgical pain. The medicine is available for both oral and rectal consumption. It is also available for intravenous administration.

There can be a case of skin rashes, stomach ache, nausea and appetite loss as a side effect of consumption of Dolo 650. If individual experiences allergic reactions or any serious symptoms such as clay colored urine, jaundice or dark urine then a medical professional should be consulted.

There is a high risk of liver failure as a result of overdosing. Hence, the medicine should be consumed after consulting a doctor.

#5. Tylenol:

Tylenol contains acetaminophen as its main ingredient which belongs to the category of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. The drug is used as a fever reducer and pain reliever. Tylenol is combined with other medications as well to relieve pain and fever. The medicine works by blocking the synthesis of chemicals which are responsible for fever, inflammations and pain.

Apart from fever, the medicine is also recommended for muscle ache, cold, toothache, headache and backache.

The medicine is not recommended for a person who is suffering from liver diseases or has any such history. It is also not prescribed for feeding mother, as the drug can mix with the breast milk and cause harm to the baby. For any other medical condition, a medical professional should be consulted.

There is a huge range of medicines available which are used to treat fever, however, each medicine comes with some side effects and contraindications. Hence, one medicine fit for an individual may not be suitable for some other. Thus, a doctor should be consulted before consuming any of the medicines to avoid further complications.

Anyways, if fever is continuing for more than a week than the condition should be taken seriously and an individual should undergo diagnosis process to find the exact cause.
