The Meteorology Department reports that Cyclonic Storm “FENGAL,” situated over the Southwest Bay of Bengal, was positioned approximately 360 km north of Trincomalee and 280 km northeast of Kankasanthurai as of 11:30 p.m. on November 29, 2024.
The storm is expected to move west-northwestward and make landfall as a cyclonic storm near the northern Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coast by the afternoon of November 30.
The impact of this system on Sri Lanka’s weather is gradually diminishing, according to the department.
Overcast skies are anticipated, with rain or thunderstorms occurring intermittently in the Northern Province and the Trincomalee district. Some locations in the Northern Province could experience fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 75 mm.
Rainfall is also forecast at intervals in the Sabaragamuwa Province, as well as in the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle, and Matara districts. Additionally, periodic showers are expected in the Western, North-Western, and North-Central provinces. Elsewhere on the island, scattered rain or thunderstorms may develop in the evening or at night.
Gusty winds ranging from 50-55 km/h are likely at times in the Northern, North-Central, North-Western, Eastern, Central, and Southern provinces.
The public is urged to take necessary precautions to mitigate potential harm caused by temporary strong winds and lightning during thunderstorms.
