Femme (2023) Review

When Jules suffers a truly horrific homophobic attack it destroys his life and everything he thought he knew about himself. Trying to build himself back up he encounters Preston his main attacker in a gay sauna …

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Seeing his attacker actually in a place for gay men was certainly very triggering for Jules, but what he would go on to do next is quite frankly rather shocking. Beginning a sexual relationship with Preston, which actually goes on for quite sometime. This does therefore contain some rather graphic sexual scenes.

The brilliance around the film was how it managed to create so many anxiety inducing moments, and that was actually towards both characters. The horrific attack from Preston on Jules was sickening to watch and then living through the trauma was felt while watching. Managing to then flip that to eventually somehow feeling sorry for Preston was not what I was expecting at all, and really highlights the performances and story that was put together for the film.

I’m not really sure which got my heart racing more, Jules attempting to record one of the sex sessions to expose Preston online and out him to his dealer friends or Preston eventually finding out who Jules was! Both of those moments and the build up towards them are impressive and so was the fact that they actually both grew to truly care about one another.

This is one of those films that will never get the exposure or credit that it deserves and makes me feel sad for it in that sense. It has so much to offer with the thought provoking storyline and very impressive performances.

George MacKay is an actor I have followed the career of for a while now, and this role was certainly something very different for him. Nathan Stewart-Jarret was wonderful as well, really showing fantastic range and development throughout. Loved seeing John McCrea in the film as well, I saw him as the original Jamie in Everybody’s Talking About Jamie when it was in the early West End run!
