Image: It's My Birthday Finally! A Leap Year Story 2nd Edition | Paperback – July 1, 2007 | by Michelle Whitaker Winfrey (Author). Publisher: Hobby House Publishing Group; 2nd ed. edition (July 1, 2007)Leap Year Day
-- Leap Years are needed to keep our calendar in alignment with the Earth's revolutions around the sun. It takes the Earth approximately 365.242199 days – or 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 46 seconds (a tropical year) – to circle once around the Sun. However, the Gregorian calendar has only 365 days in a year, so if we didn't add a day on February 29 nearly every 4 years, we would lose almost six hours off our calendar every year. After only 100 years, our calendar would be off by approximately 24 days!

Women have the right to propose to a man
-- This goes back hundreds of years when the leap year day had no recognition in English law (the day was 'leaped over' and ignored, hence the term 'leap year'). It was decided the day had no legal status, meaning a break in tradition on this day was acceptable. So on this day women can take advantage of this anomaly and propose to the man they wish to marry.
Bad Luck Day
-- In Scotland, it used to be considered unlucky for someone to be born on Leap Day, just like Friday 13th is considered an unlucky day by many. In Greece, it’s said to be unlucky for couples to marry during a Leap Year, and especially on Leap Day.
St Oswald's Day
-- Leap Day is also St Oswald's Day, named after an archbishop of York who died on February 29, 992. The memorial is celebrated on February 29 during Leap Years and on February 28 during common years.
One More Disney Day (2012)
-- Disney Parks offers an extra day of magic for you called One More Disney Day. Both Magic Kingdom Park and Disneyland park will stay open for 24 hours straight. From 6 a.m., February 29 to 6 a.m., March 1, local time, you can fill the extra day of leap year with a marathon of Disney Parks fun.
