Valentine's Day
- a celebration of love and lovers. The roots of Valentine's Day goes back to ancient times, when people paid honor to the Roman God of Fertility. This was known as the Feast of Lupercalia, and was celebrated even then on February 14th.
Ferris Wheel Day
- The original Ferris wheel was designed by George Washington Gale Ferris, Jr., as a landmark for the 1893 World's Colombian Exposition in Chicago. The name later came to be used generically for all such rides. Take a ride on a Ferris wheel and remember how fun it is to be up high while the wind blows over your face.

Quirky Alone Day
- a do-it-yourself celebration of romance, friendship, and independent spirit. It's a celebration of all kinds of love: romantic, platonic, familial, and yes, self-love. International Quirky Alone Day is not anti-Valentine's Day. It's NOT a pity party for single people. It's an alternative--a feel-good alternative to the marketing barrage of Valentine's Day and an antidote to the silicone version of love presented in shows such as Hooking Up and The Bachelor.
National Donor Day
- A day to encourage people to sign up to donate their organs. It may save a life. National Donor Day was started in 1998 by the Saturn Corporation and its United Auto Workers partners with the support of the US Department of Health and Human Services and many nonprofit health organizations.
Eniac Computer Introduced
- J. Presper Eckert and John W. Mauchly demonstrated the Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer (ENIAC) for the first time at the University of Pennsylvania in 1946. This was the first electronic digital computer. It occupied a room the size of a gymnasium and contained nearly 18,000 vacuum tubes. The army commissioned the computer to speed the calculation of firing tables for artillery. By the time the computer was ready, WWII was over. However, ENIAC prepared the way for future generations of computers.
National Have a Heart Day
- The goal of this celebration of life is to create a new consciousness concerning the impact of our food choices on the environment, world hunger, animal welfare and human health—especially heart health. Vegetarian diets increase longevity and help prevent—and even reverse—heart disease. Total vegetarians live about 15 years longer than non-vegetarians and suffer less than one-tenth the heart disease death rate of non-vegetarians.
League of Women Voters Day
- While meeting in Chicago to celebrate the imminent ratification of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, leaders of the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA) approved the formation of a new organization—the League of Women Voters. Once the candy has cooled, it can be taken out of the mold.
Read To Your Child Day
- Just 20 minutes a day reading aloud with young children strengthens relationships, encourages listening and language skills, promotes attention and curiosity, and establishes a strong reading foundation. These skills are essential for success in school and in life. It takes hundreds of hours of “lap time” for a child to acquire the pre-literacy skills necessary for learning to read early and well. From birth to age five, the pleasant activity of listening to and talking about stories trains a child's brain, ears, and eyes for eventual success in learning to read.
