For many people their life is rather incomplete if they do not have a pet. Some are cat people, others prefer dogs, and still others consider a lizard or snake a pet. No matter what pet you are fond of, it will require love, attention and some basic necessities.
This article will discuss birds and the care they need to be healthy and happy little feathered beings! The following list should help both the existing bird owner and the person who is planning on becoming a bird ‘parent’.
Bird Cages Bird cages need to be large enough to accommodate the wing spread of the bird. Birds need to exercise their wings without fear of getting their wings stuck in the cage wire.It is very important to keep your bird cage clean; change the paper daily, and wash the bottom portion monthly using clear water. Use sandpaper to clean the perches - no water! (water will soften the wood and cause splinters).
Toys Birds are inquisitive and playful - they need toys for both mental and physical stimulation. Make sure the toys are size appropriate. Get puzzle toys Have at least one toy that is made from wood (Birds instinctively chew wood) Bathing Let your bird bathe daily, in the morning or afternoon hours. I set a dish in the sink and let the water drizzle into it (like a water fallâ). Place a plastic ball in the dish to make the bath even more fun for your bird.
Birds do not like to be handled when their feathers are wet; let him dry before trying to handle him.
Grooming Birds need to have their beaks, nails and wings trimmed. Do not attempt this if you have not been trained. Twice a year for the beaks and nails, and every 3 months for the wings should keep your bird in top condition.
Illness If you notice your bird sitting quietly on his perch with his feathers all puffed up, chances are he is ill.
Place a towel around one side of the cage, and place a lamp (without the shade) next to the wires on the opposite side of the cage. This set up will create warmth for the bird. He will be able to get as close to the light bulb as he needs for warmth.
These are the basics for owning a healthy and happy bird.
