Featured Abstract Artist Craig Marshall Smith

By Abstractartbylt @artbylt

Colorado abstract artist Craig Marshall Smith was born in Flint, Michigan and received an MFA from UCLA in 1973.  He says his painting is a combination of abstract expressionism, architectural draftsmanship, and the influence of Asian calligraphy.  I can certainly see all three in his work:

Craig has his work in collections of the Kirkland Museum of Fine Art in Denver, Colorado, and the Museum of Outdoor Arts in Englewood, Colorado.  He has taught at UC Santa Barbara, Arizona State in Tempe, and the Metropolitan State College of Denver.

I find some of his less cororful pieces the strongest, with arresting compositions.  Here's one of my favorites:

You can hear Craig talk about his art on this you-tube video, and see more of his vibrant paintings there.  He is also featured in a book on Colorado abstract art by Pagliz and Chandler:  Colorado Abstract: Paintings and Sculpture.
