Fatherson have shared a live recording of new track ‘Honest to God’ ahead of the release of new album ‘Normal Fears’ on 25 February via Easy Life Records. While the piano-led song focuses on a dark period in 2019 when the trio struggled to figure out their next steps (Ross Leighton says it’s ‘about one of the least confident times in my life, and feeling like a total failure. It’s about that crippling loss of confidence spinning yourself into a really dark place. Thinking the worst in every situation and not being able to believe in yourself’), the intimate nature of the video reminded us of the stripped-back Twilight Sad sessions.
Ross gives himself a talking to as he tries to figure his way out of this brain fog and reflects on the effect the negative emotions depression and anxiety have had on his well-being: ‘I couldn’t explain it so I won’t even try. The light in my eyes has gone cold’; ‘I’m trying so hard to find all the pieces of me that I lost somewhere along the line’. It’s a powerful and poignant piece that will break even the coldest of hearts: ‘I’m just trying to keep my feet on the ground’.
