A prisoner who had been fasting for four days has died after falling into a water tank at the Magazine Prison, the Borella Police said. The deceased has been identified as Saul Hameed Mohammed Saffardeen (56) of Meeraniya Street, Maligawatte.It had been revealed that the he had been sentenced to prison for one and a half months after being convicted of drug trafficking charges and sent to the F ward of the prison.
This prisoner who had been strongly addicted to drugs had not taken any food since the day He was sent to prison, according to police inquiries.
During the four days he had not slept at night, and the detainee had been seen sitting on the water tank while another prisoner was on his way to the toilet and when this detainee was returning, he had seen the deceased lying on the water tank and gone and spoken to him. Police said since there was no response authorities had been informed.
When prison officers and detainees had taken the deceased to the prison hospital and admitted him, he had been dead, the police said.
The post-mortem examination is due to be carried out at the police mortuary. Sub-Inspector Sriyaratne Kuruppuarachchi and Constable (75110) Ranuka Silva are carrying out investigations on the instructions of Officer-In-Charge of the Borella Police Chief Inspector of Police M.J.R.Samarasinghe.
