Fashionable Inspiration, Not Exploitation

Fashion designers, just like regular people in everyday life, often mistake exploitation forinspiration. Being inspired by nature, its beauty, patterns, colors and shapes is very different from stealing a piece of that same nature and transforming it, usually through very cruel andpolluting processes into clothing, shoes, handbags and other accessories.

One of the recurrent trends in fashion, present also in the Spring/Summer 2013 collections areexotic skins. And here’s what separates Stella McCartney (known for her eco-sustainable designs) and her new python print bag (Anne Hathaway has already been spotted with one of these while out and about in Paris) from other designers’ interpretation of animal prints: Stella doesn’t steal from nature. She observes it, finds inspiration and then searches for innovative ways of printing that motif on fabrics. And this is how you get a real eco-friendly, designer handbag.
