A dear person used to tease me "manang" a few times when I confessed I liked the classics "Wuthering Heights" and "Pride and Prejudice". So it should come as no surprise that I'm very much interested in the literary classic adapted to film, “Far From the Madding Crowd” starring Carrey Mulligan. Never mind that it received raves from critics and audience alike when it opened on a limited release at the US box office.

A scene in an exciting period movie based on a book by a celebrated novelist!

Based on the novel of the same title by Thomas Hardy, “Far From the Madding Crowd” tells the story of Bathsheeba Everdene, a headstrong woman who attracts three very different but very determined suitors:  Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schoenaerts), a sheep farmer, captivated by her willfulness; Frank Troy (Tom Sturridge), a handsome and reckless Sergeant; and William Boldwood (Michael Sheen), a prosperous and mature bachelor. Let's just say I can relate very much with Bathsheeba-- her willfulness, her avant garde choices in her fight for independence, her romantic relationships, her perseverance, etc. etc. ad nauseum. “She is a modern woman,” Mulligan says of her character, “and I think it is an extraordinary feat by Hardy to write somebody like that, and to enjoy her ‘otherness’. You can see in the writing that he is taking a real joy in writing this different, obtuse, rebellious woman. She isn’t like the people who surround her. She is different.”

Great News: “Far From the Madding Crowd” opens on July 8!

Nice trailer right??
