Fall Plantings: Window Boxes

By Kevin O'Gara

This past weekend, I took advantage of the amazing fall day and picked up some ornamental cabbage and pansies to fill the planter in my window. After lining the window box, it was easy to place each plant in. These plants will survive all winter long, and look so nice right outside my window. Click below for more details!

The first step, which was the trickiest, was to line the window box. Any sort of watertight plastic will work for this. It prevents the window box from rotting and keeps moisture in to prevent the soil from drying out! I removed all the dirt into a bucket, lined it, then dumped the soil back in.

After this, it was time to plant! I laid out the plants to figure out a pattern to plant them in. I pretty much just grouped them in pairs. These annuals can be planted in three easy steps: Shake (out the roots), Dig (a small hole), and Cover (up with dirt)!

Ta-Da! I love window boxes because they bring plants closer to the inside of your home, without them actually being inside! Need window box inspiration? Check out this inspiration board!
