The airshows at Edwards AFB were always fun to attend, one never knew what to expect. Case in point is this two-seat prototype YA-10B, the sole dual seat A-10. This aircraft was converted from an A-10A for work at night and adverse weather. Making its first flight from Edwards on 4 May 1979. After 28 successful test flights the program was canceled because of advancements in night attack technology (LANTIRN pods, etc). The production run of 700+ aircraft were delivered as A-10As, in 2005 a program was started to upgrade the aircraft to the A-10C configuration, with modern avionics for use with precision weaponry. In 2024, US Air Force officials stated that the service “is planning to divest the entire fleet of A-10 aircraft within the next 3-5 years”.
