Opening with a squelch of Twilight Sad-esque guitar, Fair Mothers’ ‘Harpy’ is a song that grabs your attention from the very first note. It then takes on an eerie folk sound as it builds up and falters around the tantalising combination of Stonehaven resident Kevin Allan’s distinctive words, restrained piano stabs, composer-arranger Pete Harvey’s haunting harp and Glasgow-based US artist Faith Elliot’s backing vocals. Fair Mothers main man Kevin asks ‘Is it right to return to the scene of our crime?’ as he looks back over his life and faces up to what he has become and muses on maturity and mortality: ‘So old man in the mirror, what you got left?’
The song will feature on forthcoming album ‘In Monochrome’ (out in August).
