Who doesn’t like their smartphone upgraded with latest software? We wait months and months for the latest software to finally arrive to our phones and make them cooler. But should you factory reset your phone after every software upgrade? Well, a couple of years ago, somebody told me that we should. But then, somebody else had assured me that there was no need for that. So I searched about it online, and got myself even more confused by all the conflicting advice that I found on the web. So, till yesterday, I didn’t really know for sure whether a factory reset after an upgrade was necessary, or not. But today, I can give you a clear answer – YES.

I am not saying this as some tech geek. I learnt this from my own personal experience. On the previous week, my smartphone received a small software upgrade. It seemed so tiny that I didn’t bother with resetting my phone after it. Big mistake. From the very next day, my phone became almost unusable on WiFi. As soon as the device established a WiFi connection, it used to become so slow that it took more than five minutes just to enter the Gmail app! And it simply refused to open any mail. One day I tried keeping the phone inactive after connecting it on WiFi, wanting to let it finish delivering all the notifications. But after even an hour, it was still in the process.

I had downloaded a couple of apps too recently. Thinking them the culprit, I uninstalled them. No difference. I even uninstalled WhatsApp, thinking the heavy flow of group messages as causing the slow down. But the phone didn’t improve.

And then, it finally entered my head that it might be a problem caused by the recent software upgrade. And I also remembered my friend’s long forgotten advice about resetting the phone after every upgrade. So, I finally did a factory reset yesterday. And guess what? After the reset, I noticed a couple of system apps on my phone that hadn’t appeared before, not even after the latest upgrade! (At least, I hadn’t noticed them)

And my phone, with all its apps automatically restored, is working as swift and smooth as ever. The only thing I have lost is my grand progress in Temple Run 2. But that’s a small price to pay for my dear phone restored to health.

So, is a Factory Reset necessary after an upgrade? YES, is going to be my indubitable answer from now on. I don’t know if this holds true for all Operating Systems. But for Android, yes.

Just keep your apps and data backed up to make the resetting process as hassle free as possible.
