Facebook has stopped selling Oculus Rift and Quest virtual reality (VR) headsets to customers in Germany. "We will continue to support users who already own an Oculus device and look forward to resuming sales in Germany soon," he added.
It comes when the German data regulator criticizes the decision to require Oculus users to switch to Facebook logins for their headsets by 2023.
Facebook bought Oculus, a VR start-up, in 2014.
Oculus's annual conference, now called Facebook Connect, is expected to move forward in an online-only format on September 16.
On August 18, Oculus revealed:
- From October 2020, new users can only access their devices from a Facebook account
- Existing users will have the option to merge their Oculus and Facebook accounts, but they too will need to log in from a Facebook account from January 1, 2023.
However, the earbuds will continue to work for users who choose not to sign in at all.
But a game reviewer left a message on the company's website, saying it would not purchase more Quest headset software.
"I don't trust Oculus anymore," they wrote.
"Despise Facebook"
A large Reddit thread on the change received a flood of comments, many of them negative.
"I'm not okay with this," wrote one user.
And Hamburg's data protection commissioner criticized the policy in a statement to German news site Heise.
BBC News reached out to the Irish data protection authority, Facebook's main data observer in the EU, for comment.
