Eyemouth

By Catty212
We recently took our first family trip to Eyemouth in Scotland and had a great time. I thought I'd share some of the pictures from our little trip.

Eyemouth is a small picturesque town in the Scottish Borders about 8 miles north of Berwick, prior to our trip I'd never been or even heard of it.

Eyemouth

Eyemouth has a working fishing port, a harbor and a nice clean beach. The Little Man had his first visit to the beach while we were in Eyemouth and loved it, and was particularly determined to eat the sand.

The beach was very shealtered and quiet while we were there. I was pleased to see a distinct lack of rubbish. There are cafes and eateries running along the end of the sands edge, offering fish and chips, ice cream or a simple hot cuppa.

The town itself although very small has pretty much all you could need including a decent sized COOP, a pharmacy, various gift shops and a fishmongers. The are also some amusements in the town, perfect for any older children.

Eyemouth has a busy fishing port which was buzzing with fishermen and wagons taking fish away. There were numerous boats docked with people carrying out work, sunbathing or simply 'doing boat things'. I'll admit there isn't really a lot of activities in Eyemouth, but there are plenty of places to walk and the beach is lovely. There are a couple of museums to visit including the maritime museum and Gunsgreen House, which was  built in 1753 by a smuggler called John Nisbet. The house was built with a tea chute, massive cellars and hidden spaces to hide his smuggled loot.

During one of our walks we were lucky enough to see two beautiful seals playing and catching fish amongs the boats that were docked in the harbor. We watched there for over an hour, dipping and diving, and bringing up fish to devour.

There are various sea birds in the area with guillemots, razorbills and kittiwakes all nesting in the high Eyemouth cliffs.

We spent some time at the beach which was clean and surprisingly serene. The Little Man explored the little rock pools with his Daddy, looking for crabs.

We loved Eyemouth, From it's beautiful scenery to it's quiet stillness. It was perfect for our first family holiday. We intend to visit again while the Little Nan is small enough to be easily entertained.
