Everything We Know So Far About Idris Elba’s ‘Luther’ Movie on Netflix

Fans of the Luther television series will have heard by now that a film adaptation is in the works at Netflix. Fans will be pleased to discover that filming is currently beginning, with Idris Elba reprising his role as the iconic London detective. We’ll keep you updated on all you need to know about the Luther film, including the plot, cast news, trailers, production developments, and the Netflix release date.

Luther is a forthcoming Netflix Original film directed by Jamie Payne and written by Neil Cross. It is a co-production with BBC Films Since 2013, when the initial scripts were created, plans for a Luther film have been in the works. However, because the series would not conclude until 2019, plans for the film were put on hold until 2020.

With Idris Elba posting some behind-the-scenes photographs from the set of Luther, we can officially confirm that filming has begun! The first take of production took place on October 27th, 2021, which means that filming has been underway for a little under a month at the time of writing.

Idris Elba had earlier expressed a wish to begin filming in September, however, due to an unforeseen delay, production did not begin until late October.

What is Luther’s plot?

Despite the fact that filming has commenced, we have yet to understand what the film’s plot is.

Who are the confirmed Luther cast members?

So far, just a few players have been revealed to play Luther, but the most obvious pick is Idris Elba reprising his role as Luther Cynthia Erivo, best known for her roles in Bad Times at the El Royale and Harriet, has been cast in an untitled part. However, it has been suggested that Erivo will play Luther’s antagonist Andy Serkis, best known for his roles in The Lord of the Rings and Planet of the Apes, has also been cast as the villain.

Dermot Crowley reprises his role as Schenk as well.

When will Luther be available on Netflix?

Luther hasn’t been assigned a release date by Netflix, but with filming now underway, we’d think it’s a good bet that it’ll come in the second half of 2022.

Will Luther be accessible on Netflix in the United Kingdom?

Luther will not be available on Netflix UK because it is a co-production between Netflix and BBC Films. Luther will most likely be available to view on BBC iPlayer before making its way to Netflix.
