Babu Bombay Street Kitchen v Beep Beep Tuk Tuk
It was time for another Southside Street Food Showdown at The Glad Cafe across from Queen’s Park in the southside of Glasgow. This time we had Malaysian-inspired dishes from Beep Beep Tuk Tuk against showdown regular Babu Bombay Street Kitchen.
We got our seats, a bottle of red wine and perused the menu…
Menu
For the £20 cost you get one starter, two mains and one dessert, picking your dishes from the two “contestants” Thankfully, we had no fights over this and were able to order and share all the dishes bar the veggie dumplings. And so first up…
Pork and Chive Dumplings from Beep Beep Tuk Tuk
Pork and Chive dumplings from Beep Beep Tuk Tuk. Served with a dipping sauce, Mrs Foodie said she could easily have lived on these all night.
Spiced Halibut from Babu Kitchen
We always love a good fish curry and this was creamy with a hint of spice, not as spicy as normal Babu dishes, however the creamy sauce mixed deliciously with the perfectly cooked rice.
Beef Rendang from Beep Beep Tuk Tuk
Thumbs up from both of us for this. The ginger, lemongrass and spice mix was tops. Good chunks of beef and lots of sauce but not too much to drown the dish.
Winter Veg Curry from Babu Kitchen
Potato chunks soaked in sauce however the cauliflower was mushy, Mrs Foodie was not pleased been big a cauli curry fan! Again, not that spicy and a bit pedestrian by Babu standards.
Sayur Ladeh from Beep Beep Tuk Tuk
Sweet potato and tofu (rather than the aubergine listed on the menu) curry with a lightly fragrant sauce. Out of the two veggie curries, this one edged ahead with more depth of spice.
Finally, pudding…
Gingerbread with mango kulfi and tamarind sauce
A spicy gingerbread with sweet ice cream and tangy treacley tamarind sauce. Excellent gingerbread, soft, spongy and spicy. The sweet and savoury tastes worked well.
Overall, Beep Beep Tuk Tuk won for us with Beef Rendang our fave dish – book your ticket HERE for tonight’s showdown!
