Canadian singer-songwriter Evening Hymns (Jonas Bonnetta) has shared new single ‘I Can Only Be Good’ – his first new material under this moniker since 2015’s ‘Quiet Energies’. Evening Hymns has played with acts including Agnes Obel, Lou Doillon and Mount Eerie and this heart-wrencing song features Destroyer saxophonist Joseph Shabason.
Jonas anticipates the end of a relationship against an evocative and slow-burning Cigarettes After Sex-style soundtrack as he pleads with a lover when they have that conversation: ‘I don’t want to fall in love again. So don’t tell me how your garden grows or what you do inside when winter snows’. Recorded live with low red lights turned on in the studio, there’s also a smoky wooziness (that subtle sax!) running through the track’s heart that sums up the bittersweet feelings when you have to say goodbye to a host of shared feelings: ‘Don’t tell me about your favorite films or the winter that you spent in Spain.’
