Ethereum co-founder, Vitalik Buterin donates $227,000 to Turkish earthquake victims

Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of Ethereum, has already made at least two substantial contributions to help the victims of last week’s earthquakes in Turkey and Syria.

A 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck between Turkey and Syria on February 6. It has now claimed the lives of 33,000 people, making it one of the deadliest catastrophes in decades.

During the past week, the co-founder of Ethereum was among the numerous individuals who contributed Ethereum to Turkey. His most recent donation to Anka Relief, according to PeckShield, was 50 ETH, or approximately $77,000, which he sent on February 12.

Anka complimented the co-founder of Ethereum for his kindness and stated that donations in cryptocurrencies have been coming in since the beginning.

Since the first day of the crisis, funds have poured into a handful of prominent NGOs. The organization stated, “It’s excellent that they’ve gotten and will get more money.”

🇹🇷 We want to thank @VitalikButerin for donating 50 ETH ~$75k to Anka Relief, a crypto aid fund & community to support Türkiye after the recent earthquakes. https://t.co/kGwXSGWL8J

Anka provided a list of wallets that can be used to give cryptocurrency. The Web3 assistance organization is also in charge of the Ukraine DAO project, which seeks digital donations to aid people in the attacked country.

Vitalik has previously contributed 99 ETH to aid earthquake victims who lost everything. On February 11, about $150,000 worth of ETH was delivered from the vitalik.eth address to Ahbap, a Turkish non-profit organization that aids those in need.

Additionally, Ahbap has provided a variety of cryptocurrency addresses for other tokens that can be used as donations.

It claims to have collected $4.3 million in crypto donations to date, the majority of which were stablecoins. According to Etherscan, the Ahbap wallet contains 409 ETH worth $622,000 at the time this article was written.

End of last week, the Financial Times in London reported that cryptocurrency donations were flooding in from all across the world. Companies had contributed more than $10 million in cryptocurrency to Turkey, with Binance alone contributing $5 million.

Last week, Binance also announced that residents of the hardest-hit regions would receive $100 in BNB through airdrop.

It is not the first time that crypto has been used to assist earthquake victims. After the 2015 Nepal earthquake, Bitcoin donations were sent to aid organizations.
