Epistaxis and its Ayurvedic Treatment

What is Epistaxis?

Bleeding from the tissue that lines the inside of your nose is called epistaxis and it can occur easily because of the location of the nose which is close to the surface location of blood vessels. It is more common and more than 60 percent of people experience it at least once in their lifetime. Most of the time this condition can be handled at home, but certain symptoms should be checked by the doctor.

Bleeding can occur in the anterior as well as the posterior part of the nose. In the anterior part, nose bleeding starts in the front of the nose on the lower part of the wall that separates the two sides of the nose (called the septum). It is the most common type and is usually not a serious condition. In the posterior part, nosebleed occurs deep inside the nose and is caused by a bleed in larger blood vessels near the throat. This can be a more serious nosebleed and often results in heavy bleeding, which may flow down the back of the throat. You may need medical attention for this so consult your doctor immediately.

What causes Epistaxis?

Nosebleeds have many causes but the most common cause is dry air which is due to hot, low-humidity climates or heated indoor air. This can cause the nasal membrane to dry and become cracked and more likely to bleed when rubbed or picked or when blowing the nose.

Other causes of nosebleeds include:

  1. Upper respiratory tract infections and sinusitis that cause repeated sneezing, coughing, and nose blowing.
  2. Blowing your nose forcefully
  3. Chemical irritants inhalation
  4. Inserting an object into the nose
  5. Any injury to the nose and/or face
  6. Allergic and non-allergic rhinitis
  7. Blood-thinning drugs like aspirin, warfarin, and others).
  8. Cocaine and other drugs inhaled through the nose
  9. Deviated septum
  10. Due to high altitude
  11. Frequent use of nasal sprays to treat itchy, runny or stuffy nose

Less common causes of nosebleeds include:

  1. Alcohol consumption
  2. Bleeding related disorders like hemophilia or leukemia.
  3. High blood pressure
  4. Atherosclerosis
  5. Nasal or facial surgery
  6. Nasal tumors or polyps
  7. Immune thrombocytopenia
  8. Pregnancy

What are the symptoms of Epistaxis?

In minor conditions, bleeding usually starts from one nostril. In case of heavy bleeding, it may start from both the nostrils and overflow the nasopharynx. In this case sometimes the blood may drip back from the nose through the throat to the stomach. In such a condition, vomiting usually starts. The common symptoms of excessive nosebleed are:

Excessive bleeding may cause-

  • Dizziness
  • Fainting
  • Confusion
  • Loss of alertness
  • Light-headedness

The rare symptoms include:

  • Bleeding from other upper body parts like teeth, gums, nostrils, etc.
  • Additional bleeding from other body parts such as bleeding gums when brushing the teeth, bloody urine, or blood in the stool or easy bruising also leads to an inability of the blood to clot.
