End the Gay Debate!

There was once a time when the word “gay” meant “happy”. Now a days, depending on who you ask, the term “gay” has a negative connotation. Recently, if you were to turn on the television to the news, or pickup a newspaper or even a magazine, I can assure you without a shred of a doubt that there would be at least one article talking about gay rights. The issue of gay rights, particularly dealing with gay marriage, has always been a controversial topic in the world, regardless of where you might live. North America, South America, the Caribbean, the Middle east, it does not matter, the issue is real!

As a gay rights activist, I have been apart of a number of different debates on whether the gay community should get the same rights as heterosexual, and let me say now before I go any further, that with each debate, I become more and more disappointed with society! I do not understand where the hatred towards homosexuals has stemmed from. I always hear the same arguments as to why the gay community should be forced out of their rights and not one of them has ever made me even contemplate becoming anti-gay rights.

The number one argument against gay marriage and gay rights: Homosexual behavior is immoral, against the Bible and ought not be encouraged! I laugh when I hear this argument. A little heads up, never say this to someone you are arguing with, you sound ignorant and hypocritical. So what you are saying is that gays are sinners? When you were reading the Bible that told you that homosexuality is wrong, was it that same Bible that told you not to judge? Did you happen to come across the number of scriptures that tells you not to judge others? I’m just wondering because, it sounds to me like, everyone that sits and calls gays sinners, and that will argue about it until they are blue in the face, does not realize that they themselves are sinners as well.

Matthew 7:1-5 says: “Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you”.

I’ve heard more than once that marriage is a tradition and that it should not be made a laughing stock by legalizing gay marriage. Really?! True, marriage is a tradition, but wasn’t slavery and the denial of women’s rights? Also, Hebrews 13:4  said “Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be un-defiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous”. With that scripture, I go to premarital sex. Is that not a sin? I ask because judging by the spike in teen pregnancies and babies born out of wedlock, it surely seems to me that, that part of the Bible seems to be being well ignored. And then not only do we take part in something that is clearly against the Bible, but then we glamorize and encourage it with television shows such as “16 and pregnant”, but if 2 men or women are seen kissing or holding hands in a television show, suddenly everyone wants to get religious. In case you were looking for a word to describe such behavior, its called hypocrisy!

It’s as simple as this: You can’t dismiss the Bible and act as if it doesn’t apply to you and then the moment you want to justify why something someone else is doing is wrong, pick it up and use it against them. Let people live their own lives the way they want to, and “Practice what you preach”!
