We've all watched a lot of TV this year, haven't we? On Sunday, the 2020 Emmy Awards will honor the TV shows that have reflected and distracted us in these strange times. Guardian, The Mandalorian, The wonderful Mrs. Maisel, Ozark and the recently finished Schitt's Creek are among the modern classics that will compete against each other at this year's Emmys.
Because of the Coronavirus pandemic, the year 2020 Emmy Awards The ceremony will look a little different, but it will still be a star-studded night. HBO's Watchmen had the most nominations with 26 nods, followed by Amazon's popular The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel at 20 and Netflix's dark drama Ozark at 18. Several newcomers have been nominated for the streaming game, including Apple TV Plus (18 Noms), Disney Plus (18), and Quibi (10), and it's noteworthy that more than half of the best drama nominees are on streaming services can be found: Netflix has The Crown, Ozark and Stranger Things in the running, Hulu returns with The Handmaid's Tale and newcomer Disney Plus brings The Mandalorian, which has already won a number of technical Emmys. In total, Netflix received 160 nominations while HBO managed 107 nominations.

Excellent drama series
We're glad The Mandalorian is getting so much love, but it's still a sci-fi action show, and at awards shows, a genre piece may be worth less than some of the prestige dramas on the list. Killing Eve and The Handmaid's Tale, meanwhile, have struggled to keep their explosive initial excitement going through seasons two and three. Stranger Things would be the popular choice over on Netflix, but the Emmys love Ozark. For my money, it's between the delicious dynastic drama Succession or the longer-running Breaking Bad spin-off Better Call Saul. A big win could confirm what many fans insist that Better Call Saul is even better than his legendary ancestor.

Excellent comedy series
The wonderful Ms. Maisel is consummate television entertainment, and the many previous victories for Costume and design are richly earned. The show business-centric Kominsky Method is likely to resonate with Emmy voters, while Curb Your Enthusiasm has had a long-awaited return to form in its 10th season. In the meantime, Insecure just keeps getting better. But it's unlikely that anything can get in the way of mighty Schitt's Creek and its glorious, life-affirming finale.

Excellent limited series
What a lineup. Incredible and unorthodox both presented a harrowing but gripping headline-ripped drama fueled by extremely compelling performances, as was the extremely entertaining Mrs. America. Guardian was perhaps the biggest surprise: a Superhero show based on a comic that has already been made into a movie, however, provided an engaging study of race and power in modern America.

Excellent television movie
It's interesting to see a nomination for Netflix's interactive adventure film Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, but the statuette will likely be a little heavier. Bad Education is a deliciously curvy and entertaining real life story El Camino was a welcome coda to the Breaking Bad saga. But the gripping Howl of Despair from American Son is the most serious and timely film here.
