During the trial against the Federal Trade Commission over the acquisition of Activision Blizzard, Phil Spencer, the chief of Microsoft’s gaming division revealed that Elder Scrolls VI is at least five years away from getting out. The 6th main line edition of the action-fantasy role playing game was announced by Bethesda in 2018. The company said that the game would take five years back then, but it appears that Elder Scrolls VI will totally skip this generation of gaming consoles.
During the questioning around Elder Scrolls VI, Spencer said, “I think we’ve been a little unclear on what platforms it will launch on given how far out the game is. It’s difficult for us right now to nail down exactly what platforms that game will launch on.” He clarified that the same team that is finishing Starfield, which comes out this September, will be working on Elder Scrolls VI. “So we’re talking about it being likely five-plus years away.”

Elder Scrolls’ delayed release doesn’t come as a surprise to most fans. Back in 2020, senior VP of Bethesda, Pete Hines said, “It’s after Starfield, which you pretty much know nothing about,” when questioned about Elder Scrolls VI. He explained that Bethesda will have nothing to share about that title for at least a few years. He said, “So if you’re coming at me for details now and not years from now, I’m failing to properly manage your expectations.”
For those who are uninitiated in the world of Elder Scrolls, it is an action RPG that was first released for DOS PCs in 1994. It was the first RPG made by the makers who were earlier involved in making sports-games. The game was planned as a gladiatorial fantasy where the players with their friends would be able to travel from town to town to fight. But it ended up being a massive, open world, RPG built on the principles of ‘be who you want to be and do what you want to do.’ There have been 5 main line games along with several spin offs so far.
