Education, Bullying and Young Trans People – Some Resources

By Cnlester @cnlester

I was lucky enough to be invited to speak to the NASUWT LGBT conference last weekend, on the subject of ‘raising trans awareness’. I focused mostly on the problems faced by trans (broadest possible usage of that word) youth in schools, with a few suggestions on how we might make the situation better.

Quite a lot of people have been asking for sources/resources – I really hope you find these useful. Please read and pass it on.

1. Natacha Kennedy’s work – this is the first place to start, and utterly invaluable. Please click here for her papers and details.

2. Gendered Intelligence - all of their information is fantastic, but of particular relevance to educators would be their workshops, diversity training, DVD and report “Issues around bullying of trans and gender variant kids”.

3. Mermaids – again, pretty much all the website, but particularly their book suggestions, and their mailing list for professionals, to provide information and support for teachers and carers of trans kids.

4. GLSEN’s 2009 report “Harsh Realities: The experience of transgender youth in our Nation’s Schools”. This is from a US charity, rather than UK, but I found it through GIRES, and it appears to tally with the research findings in the UK.
