Ed Wood: 30th Anniversary- Tim Burton’s Classic Look At A Maligned Filmmaker
Quick Take: While not my favorite Tim Burton film, I do really enjoy the energy he brings to this tale of the maligned director of Plan 9 From Outer Space. There’s something about Burton and his style that oddly compliments one of the most notorious directors of all time, and he managed to get a strong cast together as well. Johnny Depp is good, Sarah Jessica Parker is fun, Patricia Arquette does fine, but it is the MArtin Landau performance as Bella Lugosi everyone remembers. That is because it is not just a good performance, but was also the wrong performance to win that year. Landau was up against three of the most iconic supporting roles in film, with Morgan Freeman (The Shawshank Redemption), Samuel L Jackson (Pulp Fiction), and Gary Sinise (Forrest Gump) all coming out of this year. So, it is very odd knowing he goes the distance. It felt like a career achievement, which mirrors how undervalued Lugosi felt. But, this does ahve easily accessible audio description. I bought it on sale in the Apple Store, and I have no regrets. I’m not sure how I feel about the transgender representation coming from Bill Murray, but other than that, Ed Wood doesn’t disappoint 30 years later. For more, check out my video.
